I think I'll have to have a sling

Tuesday April 14th 2009 | by Jo [mail] | Categories: Pregnancy

It must be over a year ago now or maybe more when Channel 4 showed a series of programmes on parenting using three different methods. I remember hubby blogging about it and it generating a bit of discussion.

Basically we discovered that we are more routine based than anything and that approach has worked really well for us. We are also avid users of the 'naughty step' and that also currently has a positive effect in managing behaviour - at least most of the time! So I guess we have found ourselves to be fairly 'trad' in our parenting approach. But we were very damning about the method that involved carting your baby around in a sling for 6 months. But maybe I'm going to have to change my opinion?

Follow up:

As the mum of twins who have only just turned two, I'm starting to think about how I might cope with three? We are not buying a triple buggy but neither am I in a position to throw away the double and just make the twins walk all the time. It just isn't feasible or safe. So I have come to the difficult decision that I might have to have some kind of baby carrier or sling for little one. The trouble is - which one?

They either seem to be frightfully hippy or terribly functional. Is it possible to get a sling that is just a little bit trendy? Do Boden make slings? What about Top Shop? (Who am I trying to kid, I haven't shopped in Top Shop for about 20 years!) What about one that both hubby and I could wear (although not at the same time). What about a style that fits the generously busted? It is all a mystery to me. So if you have any advice please can you let me know. All suggestions gratefully received.

Steve and Ali used (and will use again with Zoe) this one;

I liked the look of it - and it goes up to 2 years I believe. :-)

Claire has a kari me style sling and it doesn't fit me- I'm too big :(

You will be able to get into a baby bjorn though- we've had Sophie in one of those for a couple of months now.

I use the Kari-me sling, its really good at spreading the weight. Although I have to admit I have had a 'baby fall out whilst toddler runs off' incident which doesnt happen when the baby is in the babybjorn (much easier to use whilst handling a toddler). Best to go to a shop and try lots out.

Excellent - I will have a look at these suggestions. Thanks very much. I have a terrible mental image of me running after twinnies with baby trailing out of the sling whilst people who don't have children stand by and tut! Sounds like a babybjorn might be the way forward.

Update - Mum and I went to a baby fair at the weekend and met the most fascinating sling lady who let me try loads on. So now I'm more confused than ever. Plus I managed to 'kill' the 'baby' I was using to try things on (a small doll) by untying the wrong straps without holding on the the child. A sobering moment!

You could try and find out whether there's a sling meet near to you. A friend runs one here (www.southamptonslingmeet.com) and has lots to try on and hire out for a small fee for a month. Also has reviews on the website of most of the slings from real mums who have tried or own them. Hope you find a comfy one! I loved Ali's Kari-me too, but it does get very warm for everyone in hot weather!
